  19.  I. Installing to Windows 95

  22.    A.Run Install
  23.  
  24.     1.Standard Installation assumes that you are installing the AppleTalk
  25.           stack to connect to an Ethernet or Token-Ring network.
  26.  
  27.     2.To install PC MACLAN onto a LocalTalk network, select Custom
  28.       Installation and check the Network Transport option.
  29.       This will give you the opportunity to add an ODI adapter.
  30.  
  31.     3.After installing PC MACLAN, the AppleTalk protocol stack needs to 
  32.           be entered into the Windows 95 registry.  The installer will do 
  33.           this for you.  Do not reboot your system until this has been 
  34.           accomplished.
  35.  
  36.    B.If the protocol and client get removed from the Network Control Panel
  37.     applet follow the steps listed below to setup the AppleTalk protocol
  38.     and client for Ethernet, Token-ring or Dial-Up networks:
  39.  
  40.     1.Select the CONTROL PANEL from your computer
  41.  
  42.     2.Select the Network ICON
  43.     
  44.     3.Select the ADD button
  45.  
  46.     4.Select Adapter (if there is one previously installed skip to #9)
  47.  
  48.     5.From the manufacturer list choose your ethernet card's maker
  49.  
  50.     6.From the list of adapters select the adapter you installed
  51.  
  52.     7.Select OK
  53.  
  54.     8.If you do not wish to connect to other PCs, remove the two Microsoft
  55.       clients and the IPX/SPX protocol and the NETBEUI protocol
  56.  
  57.     9.Select Add
  58.  
  59.     10.Select Protocol 
  60.  
  61.     11.Select ADD 
  62.  
  63.     12.Under Manufacturers List box choose Miramar Systems, Inc.
  64.  
  65.     13.Select the Miramar Systems AppleTalk protocol for NDIS3 and
  66.        press OK

  68.     14.Select the ADD button

  70.     15.Select Client

  105.     11.Under Manufacturers List box choose Miramar Systems, Inc.

  107.     12.Select the Miramar Systems AppleTalk protocol for ODI and
  108.        press OK

  116.     16.Under Manufacturers List box choose Miramar Systems, Inc.

  120.     18.Select OK again to enter the new values into the Windows registry.

  125.  IIa. Upgrading from Personal MACLAN connect v5.5x to PC MACLAN v6.2
  126.  
  127.   Please remove the File Server and Print Server from the Start-up Group prior
  128.  to upgrading.
  129.  
  130.  You do not need to uninstall v5.5x from Windows 95 prior to installing.
  131.  
  132.  The File Server database in Personal MACLAN version 5.5x for Windows 95 is
  133.  not compatible with version 6.2.  During installation the installer will
  134.  detect the location of the previous version and will create backup files
  135.  (extension .BAK).  The first time the File Server is run, these .BAK files
  136.  will be converted to the new database format which supports Long File Names.
  137.  
  138.  IIb. Upgrading from PC MACLAN v6.x to PC MACLAN v6.2
  139.  
  140.  Please remove the File Server and Print Server from the Start-up Group prior
  141.  to upgrading.
  142.  
  143.  You do not need to uninstall v6.x from Windows 95 prior to re-installing.
  144.  
  145.  You will need to run the backup utility on the File server to prevent the
  146.  loss of Longname and resource information on Macintosh files stored on PC
  147.  volumes. Before performing the upgrade, if you use the File Server to save 
  148.  Macintosh files on your PC, you must backup the server system files.  From
  149.  the Server menu, select Backup System files and change the destination
  150.  directory to any directory other than "." or "MACLAN6." After completing 
  151.  the upgrade, copy the .BAK files to the PCMACLAN directory and change
  152.  the extension to .DAT.  The next time the server is run the system files 
  153.  will be reported as corrupt and a rebuild will be requested.  This
  154.  is normal.
  155.  
  156.  If you are upgrading from a beta release of PC MACLAN v6.0, due to changes
  157.  to the UNC path structure, you must delete your AppleTalk network printers
  158.  before attempting to print.  Re-establish your printers by double clicking
  159.  the printer from the Network Neighborhood or by browsing in the Add Printer
  160.  wizard.
  161.  
  162. =============================================================================
  163.  III. Unlisted Adapters information
  164.  
  165.   If you have a Network adapter that was not listed during Install then 
  166.   you will need to determine whether it came with NDIS or ODI drivers.
  167.  
  168.   ---------------------------------------------------------------------------
  169.   A.For ODI unlisted adapters
  170.  
  171.   If you cannot locate your specific network adapter from the Install 
  172.   "Adapter selection list" perform the following STEPS:
  173.  
  174.     1.Locate the ODI driver on the disk that came with your adapter.
  175.       (XXXXXXXX.COM)
  176.  
  177.     2.Copy the ODI driver file into the PC MACLAN Installation
  178.       directory.
  179.             Ex: Copy A:\ODI\XXXXXXXX.COM C:\MACLAN6
  180.     
  181.     3.Run INSTALL, select Custom install and check the Network Transport
  182.        checkbox. From the Select Network Adapters and select UNLISTED
  183.        adapter from the NET CARD list.
  184.  
  185.     4.After INSTALL, use a text editor like NOTEPAD and edit the NET.CFG
  186.        file located in the PC MACLAN Installation directory and change all
  187.        XXXXX text to the name of your ODI driver.
  188.  
  189.     5.Using a text editor, edit the ATDRIVER.BAT file located in the PC
  190.        MACLAN Installation directory & change XXXXX text to the name of
  191.        your ODI driver.
  192.  
  193.   If your adapter has settings such as different interrupts, DMA, Memory 
  194.   Address, Port Address than those presented during installation it maybe
  195.   necessary to edit the NET.CFG file located in the MACLAN6 directory.

  218.   For Token-ring, change all "ETHERNET..." text to "TOKEN-RING..." for example:
  219.   instead of "FRAME ETHERNET_SNAP" enter "FRAME TOKEN-RING_SNAP"

  221.   B.For NDIS3 unlisted adapters. 
  222.   
  223.     1.Run the Network Applet from Windows 95 Control Panel. 
  224.  
  225.     2.Select Add 
  226.  
  227.     3.Select Add adapter to see if your Network adapter is listed. If it's
  228.       unlisted follow the manufacturers' directions on installing NDIS3 
  229.       drivers for Windows95.
  230.  
  231.     4.If you find your adapter, select it.
  232.            
  233.     5.If you do not need to connect to other PCs or to Netware servers,
  234.       remove the Netbeui and IPX/SPX protocols.
  235.  
  236.         Be sure to check your Windows 95 documentation for details.
  237.  
  238. =============================================================================
  239. IV. ERRORS during INSTALLATION
  240.  
  241.   1.PC MACLAN may have detected incompatible AppleTalk drivers on your
  242.     system.  Please remove all items as listed below from your system
  243.     files.
  244.  
  245.     Install reports "Found Farallon"
  246.  
  247.     IN AUTOEXEC.BAT 
  248.             "aboth.bat"  may appear as "call ABOTH.BAT"
  249.             "aprint.bat" may appear as "call APRINT.BAT"
  250.             "afiles.bat" may appear as "call AFILES.BAT"
  251.             "aarp.com"
  252.             "atalk.com"
  253.             "pntvdd.exe"
  254.   
  255.     IN FILE DIRECTORIES
  256.     Locate your "c:\phonenet" directory and rename "net.cfg" to "net.xxx".
  257.  
  258.     IN SYSTEM.INI
  259.     Edit & remove: "PhoneNETMemoryPool" statement from the "386Enh" section
  260.  
  261.   2. "PC MACLAN has detected a previous installation. Drivers are incompatible
  262.     with version 6.2"
  263.  
  264.     Found earlier version Personal MACLAN Connect/PC MACLAN
  265.     IN AUTOEXEC.BAT
  266.                      ATDRIVER.BAT        
  267.                      MLDRIVER.BAT
  268.                      LMSTART.BAT
  269.  
  270.   3. "PC MACLAN has detected AppleShare for Windows installation. This 
  271.         is compatible with Personal MACLAN versions 6.2"
  272.  
  273.     Found AppleShare
  274.     IN AUTOEXEC.BAT            "ATDRIVER.BAT"
  275.                     
  276.   4. Norton Navigator
  277.     Disable Norton Navigator before installing as it will prevent
  278.         installation.  You can enable it after Install has completed.
  279.  
  280.   5. "The AppleTalk driver was not found."
  281.     The file server or print server are in the start-up group.  These must
  282.     be removed before upgrading to PC MACLAN v6.2.
  283.  
  284.   6. "Warning:Could not modify Net.cfg"
  285.     You have a folder or file named "Install.tmp."  Delete or rename this
  286.     item to allow the installer to complete.
  287.  
  288. =============================================================================
  289. V. ERRORS during system OPERATION
  290.   ---------------------------------------------------------------------------
  291.   1. "Need to run LSL.COM"
  292.     This error will occur if you are running Novell Netware and Install
  293.     detected LSL.COM in system memory.
  294.  
  295.     FIX:  Edit your AUTOEXEC.BAT and move the "CALL <path>\ATDRIVER.BAT" 
  296.     statement AFTER the line(s) that execute the LSL and MLID 
  297.     statements.
  298.  
  299.     Example:
  300.         Before  CALL ATDRIVER.BAT
  301.             PATH C:\DOS;C:\WINDOWS
  302.             C:\NETWARE\LSL
  303.             C:\NETWARE\3C5X9
  304.             etc....
  305.  
  306.         After   PATH C:\DOS;C:\WINDOWS
  307.             C:\NETWARE\LSL
  308.             C:\NETWARE\3C5X9
  309.             CALL ATDRIVER.BAT
  310.             etc....
  311.     
  312.     NOTE:All network device drivers are provided for the exclusive use of
  313.     Personal MACLAN Connect using the manufacturer's proprietary network 
  314.     adapters. Using a manufacturer's network drivers with another manufac-
  315.     turers' network adapter is strictly prohibited.
  316.  
  317.   2. "Access Denied"
  318.         This error may occur when a file is copied to a "Drop Box" from a DOS
  319.     box.  The operating system attempts to set the time/date of the file
  320.     to its original value after the file has been successfully copied.
  321.     This operation fails and the system returns the error condition.  The
  322.     file has been copied to the "Drop Box" but has the current time/date.
  323.  
  324.   3.    To browse for network printers from within the Add Printer wizard 
  325.         you'll need to get and install the Win 95 Service Pack.
  326.  
  327.   4. "File not found" errors:
  328.         Macintosh folders containing a '\' (i.e. backslash) cannot be  accessed
  329.         correctly.
  330.  
  331. ==============================================================================
  332.  
  333. VI. Incompatible Adapters (ODI & NDIS3)
  334.  
  335.   Some older adapters have not had their ODI driver updated by the manufacturer
  336.   and have become out of spec to the current requirements of ODI and NDIS3.
  337.   The following list contains the adapter, the problem you may experience and
  338.   a possible workaround.
  339.  
  340.   NE1000                  
  341.   Problem:    Incompatible, obsolete drivers.
  342.   solution:   None
  343.  
  344.   INTEL ETHER EXPRESS PRO  
  345.   Problem:    Windows freezes at splash/intro screen
  346.           Windows freezes on re-entry after closing
  347.  
  348.   Solutions:  
  349.     1.If running Windows for WorkGroups 3.11 configure with the ODI protocol
  350.     2.Obtain the latest NDIS3 driver from Intel. 
  351.  
  352.   APPLE LOCALTALK
  353.   Problem:   Incompatible, obsolete drivers.
  354.   Solution:  Use an Apexx PCTALK adapter instead.
  355.  
  356.   TOPS/SITKA CARDS
  357.   Problem:   Incompatible, obsolete drivers.
  358.   solution:  Use an Apexx PCTALK adapter instead.
  359.  
  360.   SMC 8216
  361.   Problem:   Can cause a Page Fault (Blank screen with flashing cursor) if
  362.              the cable is disconnected from adapter during a file copy.
  363.   Solution:  Obtain the latest NDIS3 drivers from SMC. ODI does not have
  364.              this problem.
  365.  
  366.   IBM PCI,ISA 16/4 Token Ring
  367.   Problem:   Can't configure adapter.  Adapter appears to be failing multicast
  368.          tests 
  369.   Solution:  Check the Miramar Systems Web site for current information at
  370.          //http:/www.miramarsys.com  See "What's New" in Tech Support.
  371.          We should have a solution by Oct.-Nov.1997.
  372.   
  373.   IBM PCMCIA Ethernet
  374.   Problem:   Can't configure adapter.  Adapter appears to be failing multicast
  375.          tests 
  376.   Solution:  Check the Miramar Systems Web site for current information at
  377.          //http:/www.miramarsys.com  See "What's New" in Tech Support.
  378.          We should have a solution by Oct.-Nov.1997.
  379.  
  380. =============================================================================
  381. VII. Performance Issues
  382.  
  383.   Some network adapters drivers may not perform to your expectations.  Miramar 
  384.   recommends that you always use the latest drivers available from the adapter
  385.   manufacturer.
  386.  
  387.   Make sure that there are no conlicts with Memory, Interrupts, DMA etc... 
  388.   as this can also cause poor performance.  The higher the CPU power the 
  389.   better PC MACLAN will perform.
  390.

  392. VIII.Uninstalling from Windows 95
  393.  
  394.    To Uninstall from Windows 95:
  395.  
  396.    1.Throw away any shortcuts to PC MACLAN executables.
  397.  
  398.    2.Delete any network printers connected via AppleTalk 
  399.  
  400.    3.Run the Add/Remove Programs applet in the Control Panel, select
  401.          PC MACLAN v6.2 and press the Add/Remove button.  When requested,
  402.          place the CD into the specified drive and select Uninstall.
  403.  
  404.    4.When asked to restart your computer, select "Yes."
  405.  
  406.    5.After Windows restarts, the uninstallation will complete.
